Tiger Safari in India: The Best Guide to Pench (Lodge, Cost & Gear)

Pench Tiger Reserve: What You Need to Know
Why Pench?
When we were researching which park to visit for a tiger safari in India, we admittedly had a tough time deciding. We saw a lot of resources on Ranthambore National Park, but it didn’t quite give us that “deep jungle” vibe we were looking for. Then we discovered that Pench Tiger Reserve was the real-life inspiration behind the movie The Jungle Book. That was it for us, Pench was the winner!
The park is about 300 square miles (roughly the size of our home city, Chicago) and is home to approximately 80 tigers. It is completely unfenced, meaning the tigers are free to roam exactly where they please. We visited in April during the dry season, and the landscape was fascinating, it almost reminded us of a wooded park in the US Midwest (just with the occasional palm tree and a lot more heat!)
The Zone System (Core vs. Buffer)
Like many parks in India, Pench operates on a strict zone system (this was very different from any safari we’ve encountered in other countries). If you’re planning a trip, this is the most important thing to understand:
- The Core Zone: This is the heart of the park where tiger sightings are most frequent.
- The Buffer Zone: This is the area surrounding the park. While still beautiful, your chances of a tiger sighting here are extremely low.
Access to the Core Zone is limited. Each gate (there are only two main ones) receives a set number of permits for morning and evening drives. These permits open up to 120 days in advance. If you don’t snag a “Core Zone” permit early, you’ll be restricted to the buffer zone and your wildlife sightings will be limited.
Travel Logistics
I’m going to be completely honest with you, Pench isn’t the easiest destination to reach, but it’s definitely not inaccessible either. You just need to have a little extra time (and patience) to navigate the journey.
Our Exact Route to Pench:
- The Flight: We flew from Udaipur to Nagpur (NAG) with a layover in Mumbai on IndiGo Airlines. This cost us $140 USD per person. While we opted for a longer layover, there are direct flights from most major Indian cities that only take an hour or two. The official airport name is Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport.
- The Nagpur Pitstop: Pench Tiger Reserve is about a 2-hour drive from Nagpur. Since our flight arrived in the evening, we chose to stay overnight in the city rather than navigate the roads at night. We stayed at Marriott’s Le Méridien Nagpur (right by the airport) for $102 USD. It was clean, convenient, and the perfect place to recharge before the early morning start.
- The Drive to Pench: From all our research, driving is the only real option to get from the city to the park. We arranged for a private driver through our lodge, Pench Treehouse Lodge and the transfer was actually included in our total stay price.
Pro Tip: If your lodge doesn’t include the transfer, expect to pay around $40–$60 USD for a private car. The roads are generally in good condition, but the closer you get to the park, the “junglier” (and bumpier) they get!

Finding the Right Hotel in Pench
Luxury vs. Boutique
When you start looking at lodging options for Pench, you’ll notice two very distinct options.
On one hand, you’ll see large chain hotels with names you may recognize (like the Taj). They offer a very standardized experience with expansive grounds, a large number of guest rooms and a more “resort” feel. While they are beautiful, they can sometimes feel a bit removed from the ruggedness of the jungle.
On the other hand, you have intimate boutique lodges. These are typically smaller and independently owned or part of a small group of other lodges. They focus on blending into the natural environment and offer a more personalize experience. We often prefer these because:
- Footprint: They usually have a much stronger focus on local sustainability
- Connection: You often get to talk directly with the naturalists, management and owners
- Atmosphere: They feel like a private sanctuary rather than a hotel
Our Experience at Pench Tree House Lodge
For our Pench adventure, we chose to stay at Pench Tree House Lodge, and it was the perfect example of why we love boutique stays. As the name suggests, the rooms are a mix of elevated “treehouse” suites and large cabins set along a river.
From the moment we arrived, the hospitality was top-notch. We were greeted with cold towels and a refreshing iced tea, which was the ultimate “Check In” after the dusty drive from Nagpur. We sat down with the manager, who walked us through the grounds, how the dining worked, and exactly what to expect for our upcoming safari drives.
Highlights of the stay for us included:
- The Food: This was a massive win for us. The meals were fresh, tasty, and featured both Indian and Western options cooked with ingredients grown in their on-site organic garden! After every meal, the chef would come to our table to discuss the next menu and any adjustments we wanted (like spice levels). As a couple with both a vegetarian and non-vegetarian, we were blown away by the variety and we left every meal feeling satisfied and truly taken care of.
- The Property: When we weren’t out on safari drives, there was plenty to do! Our favorite ways to spend the afternoon were cooling off in the pool, watching animals visit the lodge’s watering hole from the lookout, or reading up on facts about tigers in their library.

Tiger Safari Costs
Let’s get straight to the numbers: What does a luxury tiger safari in India actually cost? For our stay at Pench Tree House Lodge, the total cost was $700 USD per night, bringing our two-night adventure to $1,400 USD.
While that might sound like a significant investment, it’s important to understand that this was a “True All-Inclusive”price. A key reason we booked here was their “Safari Specialist.” This person’s entire role is to navigate the complex Indian permit portals to secure your zone permits and coordinate your drives. If you’ve done any research on India safaris, you know how difficult this is to do on your own. Having this included in our price made the entire experience stress-free!
What’s Included in a Full-Board Safari Package?
This is exactly what our $700/night covered:
- Luxury Accommodations: Two nights in an elevated treehouse with 24-hour electricity, powerful A/C, a private balcony, and a king-sized bed.
- All Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus early morning snacks before our sunrise drives and unlimited coffee/tea.
- Four Private Safari Drives: Two drives per day into the Core Zone of Pench Tiger Reserve. This included the private Jeep (Gypsy) for just us and our dedicated naturalist (guide).
- The Logistics: Round-trip private transfers to and from Nagpur in an air-conditioned SUV.
Tipping Guide
Tipping in India is customary and highly appreciated, especially in the safari industry where the staff works incredibly long hours. While the amounts are listed below in USD, we tipped everyone in Indian Rupees. Here is the guideline we followed:
- Naturalist (guide): $20 USD per day. Our naturalist worked directly for the lodge and stayed with us for all four drives. We tipped him in a lump sum at the end of our stay.
- Park Ranger: $5 USD per drive. A park ranger is required to ride in the vehicle for every drive. Since this person changed each time, we tipped them in cash at the end of each session.
- Lodge Staff: $15 USD per night. Our lodge had a communal tipping box for the housekeepers, chefs, and gardeners. We tipped at the end of our stay.
- Transfer Driver: $5 USD per trip. We tipped our driver after the journey from Nagpur, and again on the way back to the airport.

Tracking the Bengal Tiger
Going on a safari drive in Pench is definitely NOT a zoo experience. It requires a lot of patience and often involves hours of driving without a single tiger in sight. However, that patience pays off! Over our four drives, we actually had 10 different tiger sightings (though some were the same tiger spotted in different areas!).
A major difference we noticed here compared to African safaris is that the naturalists in Pench do not use radios to communicate. They can’t just rush off to a location because someone else had a spotting. Instead, they have to rely on the “sounds of the jungle,” which is incredibly impressive to witness! They listen for the alarm calls of deer and monkeys and follow those sounds to track the tigers.
Spotting the famous Bengal tiger can take time, but the moment one pops out from the brush, every minute spent waiting disappears. They are truly one of the most majestic animals to witness in the wild.
Other Animals to See
Even when you aren’t seeing tigers, the park is still lush with life. We were able to see a huge range of wildlife, including:
- Peacocks: We were shocked to learn that they can fly!
- Indian Gaur: These massive animals are similar to bison and are incredibly powerful to see up close.
- Jackals and Wild Boar: We saw several of these trotting through the meadows.
- Birds: We spotted everything from owls, kingfishers and even eagles!
There are also Leopards and Sloth Bears in the park, though they are incredibly shy. We didn’t get a chance to see them this time, but that just gives us another reason to come back!

Safari Gear List
Camera Gear for Wildlife Photos & Videos
This is probably the most important tip in this article and it surprises most people: You are NOT allowed to use cellphones inside Pench Tiger Reserve.
Because of this rule, having a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a high-quality zoom lens is essentially a requirement if you want to capture your sightings. While phones are out, you are allowed to bring in small action cameras like a GoPro or Insta360 for video.
Our exact camera setup for this trip included:
- Sony a6400 Camera The backbone of our professional shots.
- Sony E 70-350mm Lens Essential for capturing tigers and other animals from a distance.
- GoPro HERO11 Great for immersive video of sightings and inside the vehicles.
- Insta360 5X While we don’t have this exact camera, we saw several people who did and got unique 360-degree angles!
Safari Packing List: Clothing and Practical Extras
Beyond the cameras, staying comfortable during the hot safari drives is all about having the right essentials in your bag.
- Safari-Ready Clothing: Opt for neutral tones like khaki, olive, and tan to blend into the environment. We recommend light, breathable fabrics, but make sure to pack layers because the jungle is surprisingly chilly before the sun comes up! This is our list of our favorite safari apparel.
- Dust Protection: It gets extremely dusty on the trails. We recommend bringing a lightweight neck gaiter/buff or scarf to protect your nose and mouth. Pro Tip: When your guide pulls their buff up, follow suit! It’s the best indicator that a dust cloud is coming!
- Portable Power: There are no plugs in the safari vehicles and long drives will drain your camera batteries fast. We carry a this high-powered portable charger to ensure we never miss a sighting because of a dead battery.
- Binoculars: Not every sighting happens right next to the jeep. We love these binoculars because they offer incredible clarity and quality without breaking the bank.

Is a Pench Tiger Safari Worth It?
If you are looking for a raw, authentic, and high-adrenaline wildlife experience, yes! While it requires patience and a 5:00 AM wake-up call, there is nothing like the feeling of seeing a tiger in it’s natural habitat! Just remember to:
- Book Early: Permits for core zones open up to 120 days in advance. Do not wait!
- The Gear: Remember, no cellphones! Pack your DSLR and a high-capacity power bank.
- The Vibe: Choose a boutique lodge like Pench Tree House if you want a stress free stay that feels personal in a luxury setting and incredibly fresh food.
